The eighth edition of Tectonic Becoming, themed “Tectonic.Narratives,” is curated jointly by Tseng-Yung Wang and Yao-Ting Wu. Continuing the spirit of dialogue among design, structure, and construction while emphasizing the importance of “collaboration,” the exhibition features five themes and 24 works. These include the Taipei Performing Arts Center (OMA, 2021), Wandering Walls (XRANGE Architects, 2019), the Taiwan-Reyhanli Centre for World Citizens (Chen-Yu Chiu + Studio Cho, 2020), Center for Art and Technology at the Taipei National University of the Arts (Kuo+Huang and Associates, 2021), and Hsinchu Wave Market (Atelier Or, 2021). By treating architecture as a “text,” the exhibition guides viewers to interpret the consciousness and intentions embedded in architects’ works through a narrative lens.
The exhibition project Tectonic Becoming was initiated in 2009 by Ming-Pin Liao, founder of Fuguach Architecture. Held biennially in different cities across Taiwan, it fosters dialogue within the fields of architectural design and construction through exhibitions and forums while promoting architectural culture and art to the public. Since its inception, it has become one of the key exhibition initiatives documenting Taiwan’s architectural development. Ten years later, its quarterly, titled a+tec, was established, continuing to promote the “tectonic becoming” philosophy while building an international architectural platform for Taiwan. The special issues published with each exhibition not only feature the exhibition’s highlights, detailed explanations of showcased works, and dialogues between curators and architects, but have also become vital records of recent trends in Taiwanese architecture.
On March 25, the Winsing Arts Foundation specially invited the two curators—Tseng-Yung Wang and Yao-Ting Wu—to share insights at DH Café. Their discussion covered the current state of Taiwanese architecture, the interplay of underlying ideological currents, and other behind-the-scenes insights. The exhibition’s catalog will also be available for purchase at the venue for interested readers.
A growing number of architectural exhibitions in recent years provide architects with a platform to convey their ideas beyond the constraints of physical space, while offering audiences an insight of the design process and architectural experimentation.
In 2022, the eighth edition of the a+tec exhibition was initiated by Ming-Bin Liao of Fuguach Architecture. Curated by Tsung-Yung Wang and Yao-Ting Wu under the theme Tectonics Narrative, the exhibition continued its tradition of fostering dialogue between design, structure, and construction, while highlighting the importance of collaboration. Featuring 24 works across five major themes—including the Taipei Performing Arts Center, Wandering Walls, Taiwan Reyhanli Centre for World Citizens, Center for Art and Technology at the Taipei National University of the Arts, and Hsinchu Wave Market—the exhibition regarded architecture as a form of text, guiding audiences to "read" architects' visions of the world through narrative.
The curators believe that architecture can be understood in many ways—perspectives may vary, but there are no absolute answers. Accordingly, the selected works were not chosen for being “the best designs” in the conventional sense, but for their rich tectonic expression and exploration of diverse possibilities. Through these projects, the exhibition illustrated how Taiwanese architecture continues to evolve along multiple trajectories, reflecting a vibrant diversity shaped by countless, yet distinct, voices.
