In Anri Sala’s artistic career, his video works have consistently woven together music, sound, and imagery to explore the relationship between present moments and historical eras. For his solo exhibition Anri Sala: AS YOU GO at Winsing Art Place, Sala reimagines and re-edits three of his key video works — Ravel Ravel, Take Over, and If and Only If — into AS YOU GO, inviting viewers to experience the flow and interplay of music and image through embodied perception.
For this expert-led tour organized by the Winsing Arts Foundation, art researcher Yeh Hsing-Jou has been invited to guide audiences through AS YOU GO, beginning with the subject of sound. She will unpack the cultural and historical meanings behind Sala’s use of music in his works, while also sharing how video artists in Asia and Taiwan have used moving image and sound as narrative tools.
“Sound has always been a crucial element in Anri Sala’s video works. His approach to presentation differs from traditional single-channel video, as he actively encourages audiences to move within and between the video installations.” - Hsing-Jou Yeh
Art researcher Ye Hsing-Jou spoke about Ravel Ravel Unravel (2013), a pivotal work that lays the foundation for AS YOU GO, the centerpiece of Sala’s current exhibition. AS YOU GO brings together three of Sala’s major video works, each incorporating iconic musical pieces: Ravel Ravel, Take Over, and If and Only If. Through a drifting journey of image and sound, the work creates an interplay of space and time. As viewers move through the installation at different moments and angles, what they hear and see continuously shifts — their experience is shaped by where and when they are. In previous presentations, AS YOU GO has been shown on a larger scale, even across curved screens. This guided tour also includes a special feature: a sound installation in the Winsing Art Place café titled Sound Bulb II by artist Wang Fu-Jui. The piece uses microphones and speakers embedded in light bulbs to produce insect-like, nature-inspired sounds. It will be on view during regular opening hours of Winsing Art Place, with a 5-minute playback at the top of every hour between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
