Pezo Von Ellrichshausen: Exterior

Exterior is the publication accompanying the 2017 painting exhibition by the Chilean-Argentine architect duo Pezo Von Ellrichshausen at Solo Galerie in Paris. It comprises a series of partial spatial paintings. Each oil painting larger than the human body evokes in viewers a sense of spatial memory—vaguely familiar yet incomplete—even extending the imagination beyond the canvas.

Beyond showcasing these unique, vibrantly colored spatial paintings, the book echoes Pezo Von Ellrichshausen’s earlier series of panoramic paintings titled Interior. The book concludes with a dialogue with British architect Ellis Woodman—curator of the UK Pavilion at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale (Pezo Von Ellrichshausen was the curatorial team for the Chile Pavilion that year)—titled “From Interior to Exterior.” This conversation delves deeply and comprehensively into the connections between architecture and painting, exploring aspects such as composition, light, color, and materials. For nearly two decades, Pezo Von Ellrichshausen has spanned architecture, art, curation, and education. Their work has been exhibited at the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Their work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including The Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
